Blogging, Comments, Trackbacks, Spam and Akismet

Comment and trackback spam is a threat best dealt with proactively. A plea.

An open plea to all folks working on blogging for Plone:

If you release code that supports trackbacks or comments, please, please, please, implement the following spam-prevention and management features, or I assure you, you will face some very unhappy users in the near future.
  1. Optional moderation of comments and trackbacks
  2. One-click mass deletion of comment and trackback spam from a single screen.  Make sure there is "check all" javascript.
  3. Akismet spam filtering, using the Voidspace Akismet Python module.
So far, it seems to me that the good folks working on blogging tools for Plone haven't worried much about trackback and comment spam. That's been OK up until now.  Plone has been mostly spared the scourge of comment and trackback spam, mainly (I think) because not many folks are using it to blog.  But now that Quills and other blogging tools are finally ready for primetime, that is going to change.  Ploneboard's imminent release is also going to add fuel to the fire.  Spambots will find a way to login.  Trackbacks don't even require logins.  It's a mess.

We'd best learn from the bad experiences of our friends at Wordpress, Drupal, Blojsom, MovableType and pretty much every other blogging platform out there.   Spam sucks.  But it can be prevented.
